LASG WON’T APPROVE IRRELEVANT OVERSEAS COURSES — Commissioner

Senior public servants under the Lagos State Government hoping to embark on foreign courses that is irrelevant with the goals of moving the state forward have had their hope dashed, as the state government said it would not approve it.
The State Commissioner for Establishment and Training, Mr. Babajide Sanwo- Olu who gave the hint yesterday explained such venture amount to waste of resource and of no benefit to the government.
Sanwo-Olu, who made the government position known while briefing the press on the stewardship of his ministry to commemorate the first year in office of governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, stressed that it would be of economic advantage to the government to invite four foreign resource persons to lecture and impart knowledge to the workers than for them to embark on the foreign trip on the expenses of the government.
Noting that the state government places high premium on training and re-training of its workforce to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of its machinery, the commissioner said the directorate sponsored a total number of 1,318 staff at various seminars, conferences and workshops based on identified training needs.
According to him, the development of the human resources, particularly of its senior and top management cadres is to capture all officers in different cadres and grades levels into the training net.
He disclosed that a career plan for training is already being developed, just as he added that the training department of the ministry is now fully computerized in order to ensure a very efficient and effective management of training for the entire state public service.
The commissioner also added that a total number of 1,200 and 1,500 teachers embarked on training workshop in august and November 2007 respectively, sponsored by the state government.
On the working relationship with trade unions, Sanwo-Olu disclosed that there are thirteen accredited Industrial Unions in the state, adding that there has been a very cordial and harmonious relationship with the generality of the staff.
As part of efforts to ensure a more efficient and effective service delivery to the people of the state, Sanwo- Olu said the government is determined to re-position, invigorate and make proactive the state public service machinery.
To realize this, he said the ministry’s Management Services and Reforms office in conjunction with an international firm of consultants and a work group from key MDAs will soon embark on installing strategic management framework document in key agencies implementing the reforms and development agenda of the government.
He explained that the frame work document will ensure that key agencies work in concert towards achieving shared vision and coordinated efforts in the implementing of the state development plans.
The commissioner explained further that the installed strategic management framework would enable the state government focus its activities in each MDA, monitor progress on execution of programmes and projects as well as evaluate the impact of projects executed in terms of value for money and interms of benefit to the people of the state.
