No fewer than 30 bags
of cannabis popularly known to as “Igbo” have been intercepted in
Lagos by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) from dealers
on their way to the state.
An Omega Opel salon car marked DH 506LSR in which the consignments
were concealed, was also impounded by the operatives said to be on
routine patrol of the old toll gate axis of the Lagos-Ibandan
Express road as at the time the occupants of the vehicles were about
to enter in the state.
Our correspondent reliably gathered the owners of the hard drug, now
at large were cited by the eagle-eyed policemen of the RRS, a
security arm of the state government, at about 3.00am Tuesday, while
attempting to smuggle them into the state.
Though their take off point could not be ascertained as at the time
of filing the report, it was learnt that the suspects upon citing
the RRS operatives took off to their heels and speed towards Ojota
area of the state and was given a hot chase by the operatives before
they finally abandoned the vehicle and its consignment.
The drug peddlers, according to sources disappeared into the hub of
some residential buildings, which prevented the policemen from
shooting in order to demobilize them as they escape.
Our correspondent who witnessed the vehicle and consignment parked
at the premises of the RRS at the Secretariat of the Lagos State
Government, Alausa, Ikeja, learnt that efforts have been intensified
with a view to arrest the fleeing owners of the consignment.
It was observed that the interception of the hard drug was part of
the pro-active measures introduced by the Commander in- charge of
the RRS, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu (DSP), a crack detective, which include
stop and search of vehicles, which is yielding positive result.
Efforts to get the comment of the Police Public Relation Officer of
the Command, Mr. Frank Mba proved abortive, even as one of his aides
said the drugs will be transferred to the Nigeria Drug Law
Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for investigation.
