Plateau varsity product of illegality —Tallen

From BUHARI BELLO, Jos

Plateau State Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Education Mrs. Pauline Tallen has described the Plateau State University established by the state former governor, Joshua Dariye as a product of illegality and that the present administration will not sanction illegality.
It would be recalled that Governor Jonah Jang had last year ordered the suspension of academic activities at the university which political observers in the state saw as a personality problem between Jang and Joshua Dariye.
Speaking while briefing newsmen on the activities of his ministry, Mrs. Tallen hinted that monies were then forcefully deducted from local governments and channelled into the construction of the university which is illegal and as such, the university is a product of illegality, adding that the present known for its resolve to follow the due process, would not continue the running of the state university.
According to the deputy governor, "If by the time we expose all the corrupt actions of the last administration, the people will be surprised, particularly the way monies meant for local government development were channelled into a project they don't even need at the moment".
The commissioner noted that, the state's quota are yet to be filled in some federal universities and ordinarily, the former governor should not have embarked on such a misplaced priority, adding that the governor should have rather used the money to revamp the state's education sector.
She said the truth of the matter is that government has no funds to run the institution and that anybody who felt he or she is financially strong enough to run the university should indicate interest and government would accordingly hand over the document to him pending when the government is ready to run a university then it would take over from such a person.
Mrs. Tallen said government would rather continue running the state polytechnic and colleges of education, adding that efforts are been made to get admission for the students in some universities.
