Barring
any hitch, the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja Lagos
will from next month join other airports in the world in compliance
with the automated airport operations system powered by the Unysis/
Meavis technology, expected to bring about seamless air travel
through the use of aviation credit cards.
The seamless air
travel solution comes after nine months of planning and facility
upgrade at the departure section of the Lagos Airport which has led
to the revamping of the departure check in control systems at the
airport.
At a facility
assessment tour, Vice President of Unysis Group, the American firm
providing software for the project, Mr. Graham Norton- Standen,
explained that when completed the new travel solution at the Lagos
International Airport apart from changing the face of air travel in
Nigeria will also position the country as the authentic hub for West
Africa and the entire continent.
He spoke of plans
to replicate the travel solutions already installed at the Murtala
Muhammed International Airport in other airports in the country. He
listed the airports to include Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport,
Abuja, the Port Harcourt International Airport, and Malam Aminu Kano
International Airport, Kano.
He explained that
the new travel solutions technology is in line with the
International Air Transport Association (IATA), simplifying the
business initiative, which is targeted at making air travel seamless
with the deployment of automated solutions.
Already, the
Unysis group in line with its partnership with Meavis airport
solutions has commenced revamping of the check in counters at the
Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, which it is increasing from 52 to
62.
The Unysis
advisor explained that with the technology in place, Nigeria would
join the rest of the world in the application of technology to fast
track seamless air travel.
He commended Nigerians that have shown
tremendous understanding in the deployment of the travel solutions
technology that will achieve precision weight regime, centralised
tracking of billing and audit of funds, which is expected to boost
the revenue of the relevant aviation agencies such as the Federal
Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
