NIGERIANS URGED TO
FIGHT AGAINST RAPE

NIGERIANS have been called upon to joint forces with the Civil Society Organization (CSO) in order to heighten public enlightenment in the fight against rape and sexual violence in the country.
Addressing journalists in Kaduna, the president of the African Civil Society Against Rape, Prince Ibrahim Lapinni-Maiya who made the called also called on parents to exhibit caution and greater vigilance on the movement of their daughters irrespective of their age.
Prince Maiya who also called on the National Assembly to enact laws that will make rape capital offence as a lasting means of curbing the menace, and enjoined the federal government to be committed towards the promotion and protection of the rights of the children particularly girl- child and launched campaigns to protect the rights and dignity of rape victims.
He therefore advised the federal government to ensure payment of compensation to the victims in government established rape cities centres nationwide.
The president who went further commended the media in its selfless attempt to fight rape scourge through public enlightenment and mobilization. Even as he also commended the activities of the nation’s first lady, Hajia Turai Yar’Adua and the wives of Kaduna, Niger, Lagos and Rivers States Governors for their support to fight against the sexual violence.
According to him, rape of children is a violation of the United Nation (UN) convention on the rights of child, saying the rape scourge must be stopped.
