NLC backs secrecy oath for workers

The Niger State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has endorsed the administering of oath of secrecy on workers and public officers.
The union Chairman, Malam Musa Bako, told the News Agency of Nigeria Wednesday in Minna that the measure was to curtail leakages of government information.
He said the congress supported government measures to curtail leakages of sensitive government documents by unknown persons.
Bako, however, appealed to government to ensure that innocent workers were not victimised or punished for a crime they had not committed.
He said: “We want government to conduct a thorough investigation into such cases, fish out those behind them and punish the culprits.
“The congress will not condone civil servants making use of their positions to thwart the developmental goals of the government.
“We have consistently educated and sensitised our members to the need to steer clear of partisan politics.
“However, the congress will not accept a situation, where the government decides to condemn or take a drastic action against civil servants without verifying the facts.’’
Bako urged the government to continue to implement policies and programmes that were beneficial to the people.
The Secretary to the State Government, Dr Mohammed Yahaya, last week issued a circular, stressing the need for civil servants to adhere to the oath of secrecy.
He said government’s decision to administer the oath on workers followed reports that some official documents were in circulation, and accused some officials of corrupt practices.
