UAD backs NUT
over planned strike
THE
United Action for Democracy (UAD) has declared support to the
Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) demanding for the unconditional
implementation of the Teachers’ Salary Structure (TSS).
In a statement signed by Comrade Abiodun Aremu, and made available
to New Nigerian yesterday urge all the affiliates and state
structures of the UAD across the country to join forces with the NUT
towards ensuring that all primary and secondary schools (public and
private) in the country comply with the directives by the NUT.
“It is most unfortunate that the Nigerian State continues with its
arrogant contempt and criminal disregard for the welfare and
legitimate demands of the teachers, whose selfless service and
patriotic commitment are crucial to the attainment of the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs) of universal basic education for all
children by 2015,” it said
The statement said, rather than motivate the teachers by acceding to
their legitimate demands, the present regime has further exposed
itself as insensitive to the yearnings and aspirations of the
toiling working people by its recent backward threat of “no-work,
no-pay”, should the strike commences.
It urged the teachers to disregard this threat and exercise their
constitutional rights to decent remuneration and secured work
conditions by insisting on the implementation of the TSS.
The UAD warns the rent-a-crowd groups being sponsored by the present
administration to frustrate the strike action of the teachers to
desist from their ignoble acts.
“We equally call on the leadership of Labour and Civil Society
Coalition (LASCO) to summon an urgent meeting to in view of working
towards declaring TOTAL STRIKE/MASS ACTION by all the working people
and popular organizations to back up the NUT demands.”
