Commissioner identifies causes of pollution

From ODEYEMI Samuel, Akure______________________________________________________________

The Health Commissioner in Ondo state, Dr. Kehinde Adedeji has attributed the increase in Environmental pollution to misuse of natural resources and rapid population growth the world over.
Speaking at a workshop organized by the state government to mark this year’s World Population Day in Akure, Dr. Adedeji said, there could be meaningful development if the population is manageable to a certain extent.
According to her, development will be enhanced through deliberate policy on population control and management which is one of the goals of the National Population policy.
He stressed the need to restrict population explosion in cities through family planning and provision of infrastructures in rural areas to avert rural- urban migration.
The Commissioner assured that all efforts would be geared through relevant agencies to promote awareness among the people, the problem associated with large families and the need to encourage and embrace family planning.
He pledged government’s  readiness to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that policies and programmes would enhance abundant food supply, good health and education for the populace.
In the lecture she delivered at the occasion, Mrs.Bola Oke- Adeagbo described family planning as having children by choice and not by chance.
Mrs. Oke-Adeagbo who titled her lecture as Importance of Family Planning Focus and Natural Mortality said, International statistics consistently showed a decrease in mortality at birth.
Such decrease in mortality, she said, offered mothers the opportunity to have smaller family which could result in better ability to provide adequate nutrition for her and the family.
Other advantages , according to her, include decrease in pregnancy related stress and unneeded pregnancies which could bring educational potentials and improved intellectual financial potentials for families.
