At Kaduna SWAN Seminar:Senior tasks media ahead of Kada 2008

By SAIDU ABUBAKAR, Kaduna______________________________________________

AHEAD of a successful hosting of the 16th National Sports Festival in Kaduna tagged ‘Kada 2008’ this November, the media has been charged to be aware of the tremendous amount of work that needs to be aware in preparing the communities for the responsibilities of hosting the event.
A veteran sports administrator, Alhaji Abdul Abubakar Senior gave the charge yesterday in Kaduna where he served as chairman of one of the sessions at a seminar organised by the Kaduna State branch of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).
Speaking after a paper presented by Dr. Faruk R. Haruna entitled ‘Media Coverage of Sports and its implication for Sports Development in Nigeria’, Alhaji Abubakar Senior who is also the Madawakin Kefi added that it would be the responsibility of the media to sensitize, mobilise and prepare the people of the state to welcome their brothers and sisters from the 36 states of the federation.
According to Alhaji Senior who, 31 years ago, had the privilege to preside over a seminar of this nature prior to the hosting of the 1977 edition of the National Sports Festival by Kaduna, Kaduna possesses the best available sports administrators, facilities and media outfits.
“I would, therefore, pray that only people whose record, interest, enthusiasm and commitment to our national goals are selected and entrusted with an assignment such as that which has great significance to the integrity and pride of Kaduna State should be involved.”
The theme of the one-day seminar: ‘A symbiotic Relationship between Sports Reporting and Administration’ also attracted Alhaji Senior to state that “it is imperative that for the festival to succeed, there must be adequate, factual and timely reportage; in addition, co-opration and co-ordination by those two important organs in the surest way to our success.”
He also exhumed confidence in Governor Mohammed Namadi Sambo as someone who will support the success of the festival with the resources at his disposal.
The seminar was declared open by Governor Namadi Sambo who was ably represented by his Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Dr. Shehu Adamu.
