Teachers’ strike: ANCOPSS appeals to FG
All-Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS)
in Abuja, appealed to the Federal Government to accede to the demand
of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).
The NUT, on Monday embarked on an indefinite nationwide strike,
demanding the implementation of Teachers’ Salary Scale (TSS) by the
government.
ANCOPSS made the appeal in a statement signed by its President and
National Secretary, Nzemeka Olisa and Halilu Iliyasu, respectively .
“We appeal to the Federal Government to urgently accede to the
demand of the NUT for the issuance of a circular.
“The circular would enable the implementation of the TSS to commence
at the federal level, as a starting point,’’ it said.
The statement said ANCOPSS was worried by the lack of positive
response by the Government to the demand of the NUT.
“It reaffirmed its full and unflinching support for the demand and
action of the NUT.
“As principals, we appreciate the damage which poor remunerations
and under-motivation have continued to inflict on the school system.
“Teachers’ welfare is the key to improvement of standards, the
Millennium Development Goals and realisation of development
aspirations,’’ it said.
According to the statement, the TSS is a necessary step that should
follow the professionalisation of teaching.
“We believe that Federal Government has the duty to set standards
that states and other providers of education have to follow.
“This is not to suggest that the Federal Government should fix wages
for states as has been implied,’’ it said.
