Activist harps on girl-child education in the north

By JOHN EWAOCHE GABRIEL, Kaduna__________________________________________________

DIRECTOR, Centre for Cooperation and Development, Kaduna, Dr. Zuwaghu Bonat has urged parents in the North to allow their female children to embrace modern education for rapid progress in the area.
He made the appeal at a meeting organized by Civil Society Action Coalition for All (CSACEFA) in Kaduna noting that the North west of Nigeria is mostly affected by girl child education as girl child between the age of 12 and above got pregnant before completing their primary schools.
‘The parents also contributed to the unusual behavior as they prefer giving out their daughter in marriage than sending them to school,’ Bonat said.
According to him, Governor Namadi Sambo has come out with laudable policy on education but feared that the local level might get misinterpretation of the policies of government.
Earlier in her welcome address, Kaduna State Coordinator of CSACEFA, Christy Oluwole Abayomi said CSACEFA is set out to tackle the problem of girl child in the country particularly in the northern state with a view to finding lasting solution to girl child education.
She said, for it to record success, there is the need for public sensitization and mobilization at both the state and community level, adding that CSACEFA has set up educational centre for young girls who could not go to school at early age.
In her presentation titled “Educating the girl child in Northern Nigeria,” programme manager, CSACEFA, Abuja Mrs. Margaret Ya’u called on all Nigerians to join hand in tackling the girl child education as it affect the development of our country, adding that educating the girl child is educating the whole nation.
She said CSACEFA has embarked on capacity building for gender related issues, capacity building for family life and health education and violence against women among others.
