Nasarawa to establish MDB

By  __________________________________________________________________________________

By SUMAILA UMAISHA, Kaduna.

Nasarawa State Government has concluded plans to establish a Market Development Board to coordinate the activities of traders and other commercial ventures in the State.
The Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Akwe Doma, disclosed this in Lafia recently while receiving a report on fire incidences at the Lafia and Doma markets.
He called on citizens to guard against attitudes that could result in fire disaster at home, office or in the market.
Governor Doma commended the committee for a job well done, assuring that government will study the committee’s recommendations with the view to implementing them.
Earlier, the Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Ja’afaru Ango, while presenting the report, identified lack of access road into the Lafia market as one of the factors responsible for the severe damage on the market since access problem constituted impediment to the smooth operation of men of the fire service.
“Government should ensure the provision of standard fire-fighting equipment in all the markets as well as embark on the training and retraining of the fire fighting personnel,” he said.
The committee also recommended to government to build an ultra-modern market in Lafia and in all the Local Government headquarters across the state.
In January this year, fire gutted Lafia and Doma markets causing the destruction of property worth millions of Naira, which prompted the state government to set up the committee to investigate the causes of the fire disaster in the two markets and recommend appropriate measures against future occurrence.
